At times, it seems incredibly hard to be happy. We might be exhausted from study, work or going out partying too much, yet everywhere we look adverts are trying to sell something in the hope we’ll think it’ll make us feel happy.
I wanted to give you my tips on how to be happier- as anyone who’s felt unhappy for a while will testify; it’s not an enjoyable way to feel.
Tip 1: Surround yourself with people who truly care about you and understand you- it’s better to have just a couple of mates who you can rely on for anything, than fifty, who don’t really give a S**t.
Tip 2: Be optimistic whenever you can! Try and think of the positive side- if you don’t get the job you want, there will be a better one just around the corner. Write down the positive things in your life and focus on them, be it your family, friends, holidays, lovely smile.
Tip 3: Try and be kind to others- research has shown this will actually improve how you feel yourself! Help the old lady cross the road, or your Mum with the washing up and you’ll feel happier.
Tip 4: Enjoy the small things in life. I love feeding the wild lorikeets on my balcony and going to the beach in summer. Simple and free.
Tip 5: Do some physical exercise that you love- yoga, swimming, surfing, running, cycling, rock climbing, sex- anything but do something!
Tip 6: Do something that truly takes up all your focus and concentration, so you lose yourself in that time. It can be fixing your car or motorbike, learning Spanish before going to Bolivia or Peru, writing, drawing, reading your favourite novel, but something that absorbs you completely.
Tip 7: Learn to forgive- not forget as this is usually impossible, but try not to be angry with anyone who may have hurt you in the past. Easier said than done, but the anger will stop you enjoying your own life.
Tip 8: Pick two things that you want to achieve over the next year and make sure you actually do them!
Tip 9: Don’t compare yourself to anyone else- you’re unique, wonderful and have a lot to offer the world!
Tip 10: Go out, have adventures and smile!.
